narrative

the shape and size of this plain glass vase attracted me. i had previously purchased the blue and bluegreen streaky tiles...because i thought they were beautiful. they were just awaiting their turn. with 3-D works, i rarely have a plan at the start. i have to exercise patience and sort of "negotiate" with the object. once we reach an understanding, all that remains is for me to work out the details. so it was with this piece.

the colors in this vase are very striking, and the gold adds elegance. while the pattern is relatively simple, transferring such a pattern to a curvy three dimensional object is always a challenge. squares, rectangles, and crazy paving combine nicely and add complexity and interest to the otherwise simple design. and a precise cutting technique gives it an overall refined style.

i was fortunate enough to have this piece selected to be included in the 2007 mosaic arts international exhibition. out of 397 submissions, by artists in 6 countries, 62 works were chosen.
