this is my workshop piece from sonia's class in istanbul this summer. the crescents were done in the workshop, and the background finished at home. my objective was to do something much different than what i would normally be inclined to do, and to try to get out of my comfort-zone. therefore, i went to the workshop without any design ideas and counted on sonia to direct me away from my usual habit of working.

the crescents in the background, defined by an absence of material... or by "grout lines" were extremely difficult, and turned out to be the ugliest part of this exercise. they have been helped substantially by a black colorant wash which darkened the gray thinset.
