| narrative | this one was a bit of a challenge. i was so happy with the black and white ones, that by now i had expectations and was attached to the outcome. it was difficult finding the shades of gray that i thought would work... i had so many and most seemed too dark or too light. i wanted to fall between the dark gray shades of the black marble and the darker shades of the white piece. those warm tones in the white piece challenged me to work in some warm gray tones. additionally, the gray marble became so dark from the moisture in the thin-set, that it threw me off at first. this one took about 3 starts before i settled on this combination of materials. i still think it looks a bit too colorful... but that is kind of interesting for what the gray one represents. initially, i had planned to put the pulse in the center of the gray one. as i got further into the project, however, i started seeing and feeling the pulse off-center to the right... in fact, the idea of centering became more and more ridiculous... stupid... even repulsive. i questioned why the right... and i tried to see it on the left... but it just did not feel right (ha!... no pun intended). i have not tried to analyze what it might mean... but just to go with my feelings and intuition. |
